Die Geschichte des Leitspruchs
Die Abtei Grimbergen ist drei mal bis auf die Grundmauern niedergebrannt und wurde jedes mal wieder aufgebaut – stärker als zuvor. Daraus entstand ihr Leitspruch «ardet nec consumitur», also «gebrannt, aber nicht zerstört».
Three legendary words that will never be forgotten in the city of Grimbergen: Ardet Nec Consumitur.
This is the motto of the abbey. It has the following meaning: “burned, but not destroyed”
It is an impressive reminder of the dramatic history of Grimbergen Abbey. A story that goes back to the Middle Ages, when Norbert of Xanten took the name Norbertus and founded the Order of the Premonstratensians.
Im Jahr 1128 baten die Herren von Grimbergen Norbert, eine Abtei zu errichten, und er entsprach ihrem Wunsch.
Im Jahr 1142 lehnten sich die Herren von Grimbergen gegen den Herzog von Brabant auf. Dies war der Beginn des Krieges von Grimbergen.
Die Abtei wurde zum ersten Mal bis auf die Grundmauern abgebrannt und vollständig zerstört. Die ehrgeizigen Ordensbrüder errichteten sie jedoch wieder neu – Stein für Stein. Nach ihrem ersten Wiederaufbau blühte die Abtei auf wie die Hopfenfelder, die die Stadt umgeben.
However, in 1566, during the Wars of Religion, it was destroyed for the second time. The friars were forced to give up their abbey.
They fled to Brussels. There they sought protection until peace was restored in Grimbergen.
In 1629 the friars completed the construction of their new abbey, and one can vividly imagine how the celebrations took place after the master brewer returned to the city.
From this point on, the phoenix was incorporated into their coat of arms as a symbol of rebirth, along with our motto and motto: Ardet Nec Consumitur.
