The iconic Phoenix symbol was chosen by the Fathers of Grimbergen and has been the abbey’s coat of arms since at least 1509. It represents the dedication and perseverance of the Fathers who rose from the ashes to rebuild the abbey after it was destroyed three times. This symbol of the Phoenix sits alongside the abbey’s motto ‘Ardet Nec Consumitur’, which could mean ‘Burned, but not destroyed’ (not the only possible translation of this, e.g. “burned, but not consumed”).
